One of the most fundamental aspects of developing a successful ecommerce business is building a brand. And every brand starts with one thing: a name.
Your Shopify store name is the first thing that every potential customer will see, whether it's on your website, from a Google search, or in an article, so it is of the utmost importance to make sure you get it right.
But what does it mean to get it right?
How some of the most successful e-commerce brands got their names
Let’s think about some of the most recognizable e-commerce brands around today: Fashion Nova, Kith, and Allbirds (all of their websites are built on Shopify Plus FYI).
In the case of Fashion Nova, it’s pretty clear how effective the name is. When you search for “fashion” on Google, Fashion Nova is the first result. Having the industry you’re in as part of your business name is a popular naming method, just look at other brands like Dollar Shave Club and MeUndies.
With Kith and Allbirds, the names are more abstract -- which is totally ok. For Kith, the name comes from an old Scottish term, “kith and kin,” which translates to “friends and family.” In Allbirds case, the name is a reference to New Zealand, the home of one of the company’s co-founders.
If you can’t find a way to incorporate your industry into your name or find an old translation to use, you can always go the Childish Gambino route and use a name generator…
How to Change your Shopify Store name
